Early Years

St Ambrose Preparatory School Early Years department comprises of a Pre-Prep class for 3 and 4 year old boys and a Reception class for 4 & 5 year old boys.

St Ambrose is exempt from teaching the Early Years National Foundation Curriculum. This enables the teachers in this setting to introduce more formal and advanced work on writing, reading and numbers earlier in the boys’ education. Although play still has an important role in the Early Years, this formal approach ensures the boys make accelerated progress. By the end of Year 1 when formal testing is introduced, the vast majority of pupils will be above age related expectations in both Literacy and Numeracy.

There is extensive provision for Early Years attendance at St Ambrose Prep. The full entitlement of 30 hours per week can be used at the Prep School for the 36 weeks the school is open annually. Please see our Admissions page ‘Early Years Childcare Provision Grants’  for full details.
